Style concepts need to be conveyed via drawings and illustrations. Fashion illustrators are skilled artists who express what a designer has on his/ her mind through drawings or sketches. They are capable of translating an idea or an image into an illustration. This representation gives a designer a concrete idea of what his/ her creation would look like once it is ready.

To be successful Fashion illustrators, you would require the following skills:

  • Advanced drawing and illustration skills
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) programmes
  • Idea about clothing materials and proportions
  • Must be creative and imaginative
  • Ready to work hard
  • Well-versed in the latest happenings in the world of fashion
  • Good interpersonal skills.
While some fashion illustrators are hired on a permanent basis, many choose to work on their own as independent freelancers. For this, you need to have an understanding of business concepts and a strong network of contacts. To make a mark in this field, illustrators must develop a personal style over a period of time.

Be it sketching for a fashion designer or a fashion magazine’s story to make fashionistas aware about a new line of clothing that has just been launched, the illustrator must clearly communicate fashion concepts through his/ her drawings. It is hard work but also very rewarding.
