The Muslin Story

wlci reviewThe story of Muslin goes back for several centuries. Muslin is a cotton fabric of plain weave. It is made in a wide range of weights from delicate sheers to coarse sheeting. It gets its name from the city of Mosul, Iraq, where it was first manufactured. Early Indian muslin was hand woven of uncommonly delicate handspun yarn, especially in the region of what today is known as Bangladesh. It was imported into Europe for much of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Bengali fabric Muslin has its uses in dressmaking, culinary arts, theater and even medicine, photographers know muslin as the standard backdrop alternative to paper, and some prefer its somewhat translucent gauze.

Muslin is defined as ‘a cotton fabric made in various degree of fineness and often printed, woven, or embroidered in various patterns, especially a cotton fabric of plain weave, used for sheets and for a variety of other purposes.’  However, muslin is much more than just a lightweight backdrop or lighting tool, it is a fabric that dates back as early as the 3rd century CE with a vast history and a variety of uses.

Muslin finds its use as a favourite fabric for dress-making and dress-designing. Recently WLCI Fashion Designing School held their very own ‘Muslin’ exhibition and showcased a variety of dress designs and had an innovative way presenting the fabric. They presented a wide range and improvised the fabric to suit modern tastes and choice.

WLCI’s Fashion Course took a very traditional material and tweaked it according to their sensibilities and liking. Big appreciation to all the students and the mentors who took time to present the traditional fabric in a new avatar!

WLCI Reviews Kunel Gaur’s “Species” Project

Kunel Gaur the alumnus of WLCI “Advertising and Design School” who now works with Wieden and Kennedy has got  applauds from all quarters for his “Species” project which witnessed enthusiastic participation of ‘artists’ from various cultures and different countries of the world. The “Species” project collectively showcased artists from around the world.

wlci review

Kunel contacted many wild artists to dedicate their latest piece to the animal they love the most. With only one rule: They had to design it in the exact form of the ‘Animal logo’. Painters, illustrators, sculptors, graphic designers, animators and even street artists interpreted the “Animal Logo” according to their own sensibility and showcased their work. The outcome of this project was mind boggling. The work they received from various quarters can only be described as an exquisite piece of ART!

The result was an ART-Menagerie. The “Species-Animal” collection brought the ideas from 101 artists to life from around the world. Supported by National Geographic Channel, the organizers showcased all the artists work and got raving reviews. The works were also anthologized and a book was released with the help of ‘Kyoorious’.

Kunel hails from an advertising and design background, after passing out from his college WLCI “Advertising and Design School” he worked for JWT and Oglivy and Mather. Kunel loves to design and create and has been a part of many extraordinary creative’s and projects in the short span of his career. Kunel in a self-confessional tone says-he spends most of his time now selling other people's brands to normal people, who (mostly) hate advertisements and can easily spot a brand that has swiftly inserted itself in a movie/tv-series/reality show or their Facebook and news feed!

Review of WLCI on Anandiben Patel

Anandiben Patel, the urban development, revenue and disaster management minister in Narendra Modi’s Gujarat cabinet, is the new ‘Chief Minister’ of Gujarat. Narendra Modi did break the norm and chose a “Woman” minister as his successor.

wlc review

The world wants to know now-who is Anandiben Patel? And why did Modi choose her as his successor? Well, for one, 73-year-old Anandiben is a senior BJP member and had a minister in Gujrat for the last 17-18 years. More importantly, she has a no-nonsense image and has set very high standards of performance in her role as minister in Modi’s Gujarat government. Her track record has been extraordinary.

Given her impressive performance, it was an almost foregone conclusion that she would be Modi's heir for the top Gujarat post. Anandiben has enjoyed Modi’s confidence since the day she entered the BJP in 1988 while being the principal of ‘Mohniba Kanya Vidyalaya’ in Ahmedabad. She completed her bachelor’s in science and then became a teacher in a girl school and subsequently the principal.

From a school principal to being the front-runner for the chief minister's post, Anandiben has come a long way. From her school-teacher days, her image has been the one of a strong woman.

WLCI says ‘Kudos’ to ‘Woman-Power’ and congratulates the new CM of Gujarat!
